Cellulose Insulation - How To Blow Cellulose into your Attic

Video Summary
Cellulose Insulation - How To Blow Cellulose into your Attic

Blowing cellulose insulation is a fast and easy way to save some money on your energy bills. Two people can do this really quickly, you can probably fill your attic with about R19 for less than $300. And you can blow it right over top of existing insulation, no problem. It's really fast, it's really easy and my favorite thing is you don't have to carry these things up through the attic hatch and try to get them up into your attic.

Cellulose insulation also has really good properties. It has a higher r-value per inch than fiberglass. It does a really good job at preventing air from flowing through it. And it's also environmentally friendly, like this Green Fiber bag that I'm holding or suggesting is actually made out of recycled newspaper. And broken up it looks something like this, once it goes through the machine. After it goes through the machine it will be even finer, and my wife is going to kill me because I just made a mess on our driveway.

Anyway, if you're going to do cellulose insulation in your house, just make sure you get ready to get dirty. Because you can see my hat is covered with it, my shirt is covered with it and the floor inside of my house is covered with it. Which, it's almost impossible not to get this stuff all over the place. So just get ready to get dirty and just make sure you try to do everything you can keep it from getting into the wrong parts of your house.

28 of these bags will add R19 to your attic in a couple of hours. So that's less than $300.

I take the bags, I cut them in half so they're like this. And then you break this compacted newspaper is what it really is. Newspaper with a fire-retardant chemical, which prevents fungus, mold and keeps the pests at bay, called borate sometimes mixed with ammonium sulfate (if you need to know). But this basically old recycled newspaper will do a better job of insulating your attic than fiberglass.

Take a razor knife, cut it in half. Break off some chunks, let it fall into the blower.

So we're going to go up into my attic right now and we're going some cellulose and we're going to do it as a one man job and I'm going to show you my little set up. And uh, show you what it looks like.

Now, I've got insulation flowing out of hereā€¦

This is the best way to get cellulose in there because it's going to create a nice even layer. It's going to go all the way across my ceiling and it's going to add at least R19. I'm probably end up at the end of the day getting at least R30 in here.

Anyway, I would definitely recommend getting a buddy if you have a chance, this is a lot harder with one person. Anyway, Corey Binford peace.
