Cellulose Insulation - How to Install Blown Insulation by Yourself

Video Summary
Cellulose Insulation - How to Install Blown Insulation by Yourself

Blowing cellulose insulation is really a two man job, but doing it by yourself is possible. If you have to go through 20 or 30 bags it's going to take you a while, but you can do it and here's how.

Cut it in half. Take it and break off some chunks and let it fall into the blower. It doesn't take long to break it up, it takes maybe 1 minute per half a bag.

To do this by yourself, you need to have a way to turn the machine on and off without actually being right next to it. So what I do is I take extension cords and I hang them up along where I'm working. And that way, I have, that work light has a plug in it. So I can plug the little one that's hanging off the rafter there. I can plug that in while I'm up on the ladder.

When I get up here, I plug this one into the outlet. And now I've got insulation flowing out of here. And once that insulation starts flowing just pan back and forth filling in all the nooks and crannies. Get every little spot. Get it all stuffed in. You've got about 3 minutes of blow time and then it's back down to load up another batch.

And then, back up on the ladder again or back up into the attic. Fill in all of the rest of the space. Pan back and forth with the hose and you know…fill it in. Get a nice even coat.

And if you have some tight spots like under the eaves of your house or this is a cathedral ceiling. Take a 4 to 5 foot piece of 2" PVC pipe and duct tape it to the end of the hose. And then put the hose back in where you need it to be and then plug it in. And then you won't have to crawl in those tight spots like under the eaves and stuff.

Anyway you look at it, blowing cellulose insulation in your attic even by yourself is faster and easier than installing fiberglass insulation.
