Sealing Ductwork - DIY - How to Seal your Ductwork

Video Summary
Sealing Ductwork - DIY - How to Seal your Ductwork

Now you may not have known it, but you were just staring at my ducts. Now my ducts are these big metal boxes. That basically are made to take the air from my furnace or my air conditioner, my central air conditioner and spread it all over my house. And the way they do that is the air comes down these big ducts, and it goes out these little ducts. So it goes out of these, what are known as branch ducts and there's a whole bunch of them right here and there all going to different rooms in my house.

Anyway, that is what you're ducts are and that is what they look like. Now the problem is and why we're here to day is they are leaking. They have tiny little leaks all over them and I'm going to show you what it looks like when the leak and I'm going to show you how to fix them. So here we go.

These big metal ducts come all the way down, they branch all the way through your house and then they come all the way down to your furnace. And this is my furnace right here.

This side of my ductwork, this one has the heat or the air conditioning that blows through it. And it blows all the way through my house and then it get returned through this one. It comes all the way down here and gets sucked into the furnace and blows through a filter and then it goes right back up.

The only reason that you need to know that one side sends air out and the other side brings air in, is because one side blows and the other side sucks. So this side sucks and this side blows. So if you're trying to check and figure out looking for leaks and nothing is blowing out of some of them but you can actually almost see a gap. It's probably because it's sucking and not blowing. An easy way to test that, we'll get a piece of toilet paper and I'll show you what I mean.

So this side is the return, and you'll see right here…look at that. That means it's sucking air in through the seams right there. So basically what you're going to do is look for any place where two pieces of metal come together, and you'll be able to find them pretty quickly. And uh…

On this side the air is blowing. You can see it blows that orange ribbon right off of there.

Now to take care of it, all we've gotta do is caulk and tape the joints. But the first thing you'll want to do is clean them up a little bit. The tape and the caulk stick a lot better when there isn't a lot of dust there.

This tape is known as foil tape and it's specially made for working on your furnace or your ductwork. And it costs about 10 bucks but it'll save you more than that in the first year, you can't go wrong buying this. Don't use duct tape. Duct tape only lasts for like a year or two and then it falls right off. So spend a couple extra bucks, get the foil tape and get some silicone caulk. And you're good to go.

The silicone caulk is going to last a lot longer, so it doesn't matter what color or what kind. Just 100% silicone is going to do a lot better of a job. That's it! That's how fast you can save money.
