Basement Insulation - How To Install Drainage Pipe - DIY

Video Summary
Basement Insulation - How To Install Drainage Pipe - DIY

Now it's hard to believe that the most important tool you need to make your basement warm and dry is actually a trenching shovel. Now one of these things is basically used to lay this white pipe that you can see behind me. And what I'm doing before I insulate my basement is I want to make sure I control the water that comes off my roof, that goes down my gutters and ends up…if I don't control, it'll go wherever it wants to. Which, unfortunately, is usually right into my foundation or right next to my foundation.

Now the reason I want to control the water and make sure it doesn't get there is obviously is because the less water I have around my foundation, saturating the ground and the soil around my foundation, the less moisture is going to end up in my basement. So the reason that most basements are moist, damp and humid places is because they are surrounded by the earth and the earth is usually wet.

So what you do is basically get a shovel, this was like $30. And get a trenching shovel, it has a 4" blade on it. Dig yourself a couple trenches, hook em up to the downspouts that come off your house. This is obviously connected to the gutters and my roof. The water comes down and I'm channelling this water down this pipe, down this white pipe here, that goes all of the way down to the end of my yard and ends up in a french drain. Where it's basically a place that's filled with stone where it can settle and percolate into the ground.

Now that's the first step you want to do, believe it or not, is to get all of the water as far away from your house as you possibly can. And that's going to make your basement warmer and drier. And obviously, less moisture, less potential for mold or mildew to accumulate in your house.
